NARRATIVE THERAPY                   Link to the Dulwich Centre for Narrative Therapy

Some of the main assumptions of Narrative Therapy include:

We tend to make meaning of our lives through the stories we tell and that get told about us.

We select just some life events, often of a negative nature, that we take into our own story lines, that come to define who we are.

We have many more experiences that we could use to turn into our story lines.

We live many stories in our lives some of which have more influence than others, many of these are hidden under the problem stories.

We have the skills and knowledge ourselves to address our problematic stories.

Features of a Narrative therapy approach include:

To view problems as separate from us, our families and communities. That means that 'the problem' is the problem and not us.

To begin to identify our strengths and resources that remain hidden by the problem story so that we may become 'intentional' in how we live our lives.

To bring to light stories that we would prefer to live by.

Encouraging people to find support for their preferred stories within and amongst their families, networks and communities

Helping the development of rich preferred stories
